In Between States is a work of personal and historical investigation and speculation, a detective story that merges contemporary field recording, archival documents, and fictional writings. The multi-year research project resulted in a book, video art installation, and soundtrack recording.
The project examines the relationship between two adjacent sites – a post-World War II displaced persons camp where my family lived for over three years and a present-day corporate industry park located outside of Frankfurt. In Between States also presents an alternate reality version of the camp as a refugee space station orbiting Earth, devised through collaboration between governments and corporations. The video installation, exhibited at Eyebeam in New York City (2013), is comprised of “lost transmissions” taken from the space station.
In Between States was supported in part by the Deutsche Börse Residency Program at the Frankfurter Kunstverein and Film & Media Artist-in-Residency Program at The Banff Centre.
